The Indian chess scene is in full swing this week with two major tournaments attracting top players and promising talents, with the 35th edition of the Chandigarh tournament kicking off and the Orenbro International in Mumbai heating up the competition.
The 35th Chandigarh State Chess Championship started at Arundo School, Manimajra, with amateur and experienced players from across the state.
The first round witnessed a strong competition, with a number of notable names, such as: Swathrit Seth, Vinodant Garg and Shanviya Singh.
The tournament is being held in Swiss rounds and is expected to run for several days with more than 200 players participating. The tournament aims to promote chess at the grassroots level and discover new talents at the local level.
On the other hand, the Aurionpro International Chess Championship is currently taking place in Mumbai, and the sixth round has concluded, resulting in a 5.5-point tie at the top of the overall standings between five of the top participants in the Grandmasters (GM) and Under-13 (U-13) categories.
Among the leaders were: GM Lalit Babu, IM Arzin Davtyan, Rishiv Sharma (U-13), Vineet Karthikeyan and Anuj Pandit
With a wide range of ages and skill levels, the tournament is one of the top FIDE-rated events of the month in Asia.
